Twilight paced back and forth in her library. It was only the first nightmare she had had since she was a little filly, but it had awoken her nonetheless. It wasn't any normal nightmare, either. At least not to her. The nightmare was so vivid that it seemed real.
Twilight could remember every detail. Princess Celestia's still form. Discord's chaotic creations. The changeling queen's evil horde feasting on the emotions of all of Equestria. The mangled and life-less bodies of her best friends. Nightmare Moon raising the moon, putting Equestria into eternal darkness. But she couldn't do anything to stop it. All she could do was stand there and watch as the beautiful place she once called home was sucked into a massive, swirling vortex of evil...
Twilight came back to reality, her coat drenched in a cold sweat.
"Twilight, are you okay?" asked Spike. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
Twilight shook vigorously, expelling as much water as she could.
"Yes, I'm fine. I was just..uhm...thinking," she said.
"Okay," said Spike doubtfully.
Twilight went through the day worrying about the nightmare she had the night before. Every time she saw one of her friends, her mind flickered to an image of their corpse from her nightmare. Constantly making her more sick to her stomach and paler in the face.
Twilight awoke again to the same nightmare. But there was more to it this time. She was chained to a chair in the throne room of Canterlot. She looked around, but all she could see was the changeling queen, Discord, and Nightmare Moon. That is, until she looked at the wall behind her. Pinned to the wall were the severed tails of her best friends and Princess Celestia. Tears came to her eyes.
"Looks like somepony is finally awake," said Nightmare Moon.
"Why did you want to keep her, Discord?" the changeling queen asked. "She's not good for anything."
"Can I not have a pet, Chrysalis?" said Discord.
"I suppose you could, but why her?" said Chrysalis.
"It wasn't originally going to be her. I would have much rather kept the little laughing pink one. But unfortunately, my cotton candy clouds went rogue," said Discord somewhat glumly.
Twilight cowered closer to the wall, shivering with fear and depression.
Twilight screamed, but opened her eyes to realize that she was being stared at. Her best friends and Spike all stood, bewildered.
"Whatever is the matter, Twilight?" asked Rarity.
"What was all that talk about Discord and Nightmare Moon?" asked Applejack.
"Whose Chrysalis?" asked Pinkie Pie.
Twilight attempted to answer their questions, but nothing came out of her opened mouth.
"Are you sick, Twilight? You're really pale," said Rainbow Dash.
Twilight shook her head.
"Did you sleep at all last night?" asked Fluttershy.
Twilight nodded and gestured with her hooves that she only slept a little bit.
"Did you have a bad dream?" asked Pinkie Pie.
"Do you...wanna talk about it?" asked AJ.
Twilight began to tear up as she shook her head.
"Oh, don't cry, Twilight," said Fluttershy.
"Yeah. We're here for ya sugarcube," said AJ.
All five of the ponies hugged Twilight. Then one by one, they said their goodbyes and left.
After they left, Twilight searched through her library, hoping to find a spell that would ward off nightmares. When she finally found the spell, she performed it, then went about her day as normally as she could.
Twilight awoke in a cold sweat. She still had the nightmare, but nothing changed about it. She looked out of her window. The sun was just barely over the horizon. Twilight let out a sigh of relief and walked out onto her balcony. That's when she realized the sun wasn't rising, it was setting. It was just like her nightmare. She could see Chrysalis's changeling horde. Discord's chaos. And Nightmare Moon raising the moon into the sky. Twilight ran out into the field. There she could see the scorched and blackened corpses of her best friends and the life-drained body of Princess Celestia. Twilight began to cry.
"Look like we win this time Twilight Sparkle," said Discord.
"Where's your elements now?" said Nightmare Moon with a sinister laugh.
Just like in her nightmare, Twilight could do nothing but sit and watch as her home was plunged into eternal darkness and chaos.
Twilight awoke again in the throne room of Canterlot. She knew who and what was in the room. Instead of looking around, she called out:
"What do you want with me?"
Although she already knew the answer, the question came out on impulse.
"Oh, Twilight, hush. Pets are supposed to be quiet you know," said Discord.
The three villains turned their attention back to their game of cards.
Twilight thought of spells that she could possibly use to escape. The only one she could think of was a teleporting spell. But she didn't know if it would work since she was chained up. There was only one way to find out, though.
Twilight performed the teleportation spell. Once she saw that the chain was off, she galloped towards the exit, with all three of the villains calling after her...
"Twilight? Twilight, can you hear me?" said a familiar voice.
"Rarity? What are you doing here?" said Twilight.
"Spike came and told me to come over. He said you were acting all strange. Did you have a nightmare, darling?"
"I think so. It was a pretty bad one, too."
"Well, thank goodness it was only just your imagination," said Rarity.
"Yeah. Thank goodness."
